Lesson 3: Solving Linear Equations

Isolate the variable using balanced inverse operations.

A linear equation can be solved by undoing operations in reverse order. Keep both sides balanced at every step so the equation remains true.

Key formula

ax+b=cx=cbaax+b=c\Rightarrow x=\frac{c-b}{a}

Worked example

2x6=14x=42x-6=-14\Rightarrow x=-4

Checkpoint

Solve 3x6=3\text{Solve }-3x-6=-3

Recap

  • - Undo addition/subtraction before multiplication/division.
  • - Perform identical operations on both sides.
  • - Check your answer by substitution.
