Isolate the variable using balanced inverse operations.

A linear equation can be solved by undoing operations in reverse order. Keep both sides balanced at every step so the equation remains true.

Key formula

ax+b=c⇒x=c−baax+b=c\Rightarrow x=\frac{c-b}{a}

Worked example

x−10=−17⇒x=−7x-10=-17\Rightarrow x=-7
