Lesson 3: Graphing Linear Functions

Use slope-intercept form to generate graph points.

For a line in slope-intercept form, slope controls steepness and direction, while the intercept sets where the line crosses the y-axis.

Key formula

y=mx+by=mx+b

Worked example

y=4x+6,  x=5y=14y=-4x+6,\;x=5\Rightarrow y=-14

Checkpoint

If y=5x2, find y at x=3\text{If }y=-5x-2\text{, find }y\text{ at }x=3

Recap

  • - Slope m determines rise over run.
  • - The y-intercept b is the point (0, b).
  • - Two correct points are enough to draw a line.
