Lesson 3: Exponent Laws

Use product and quotient rules for powers.

Exponent rules compress repeated multiplication into fast symbolic steps. Keep bases identical before combining exponents.

Key formula

aman=am+n,  aman=amna^m\cdot a^n=a^{m+n},\;\frac{a^m}{a^n}=a^{m-n}

Worked example

2423=27=1282^{4}\cdot 2^{3}=2^{7}=128

Checkpoint

In 6162, what is the exponent on 6?\text{In }6^{1}\cdot 6^{2}\text{, what is the exponent on }6?

Recap

  • - Add exponents for multiplication of same base.
  • - Subtract exponents for division of same base.
  • - Use roots as fractional exponents.
